Our Stories Matter: Paul

Paul spent five years living on the streets of Denton because he was in a toxic relationship. He admits that half of the toxicity were his actions and attitude. Later that same year, COVID struck and many of his employment options disappeared.

He had spent most of his career constructing and remodeling family homes, but no one wanted people in their homes due to the pandemic. He was not able to get shelter, and he was also now without a vehicle. So, he found himself homeless, without a job or means of transportation. People he knew were not so sure about having a roommate. Being homeless became an accepted way of life, one of day-to-day survival.

In the summer of 2019, Paul was approached by the street outreach team of Giving Hope (which is now part of Grace Like Rain). He met Carrie Palmer, Scott Butler, and Wendy Nobles. With their help, Paul was eventually able to move into emergency housing. Two years later in 2021 with the help of CAA/UW Giving Hope/GLR weas able to secure Paul a safe hotel. On September 3rd, 2022, Paul moved into his apartment through the PSH program.

Paul can now sleep somewhere dark at night, cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. He finally has a kitchen! A place where he can shower daily and use the facilities without being seen. He can do his laundry! He no longer has to sleep with one eye and both ears open. He no longer has to fear theft, especially since he lost many belongings while living on the street.

Paul is deeply grateful for the help he received from Wendy Nobles, Scott Butler, Crystal Clark, and Rebecca Shandy. In addition, he will never forget the support and assistance he got from this group and the board of Giving Grace.
